First Serbian Rural Tourism Congress

The First Congress of Rural Tourism in Serbia, dedicated to “Multi-sector Partnerships as Basis for Rural Tourism Destination Creation”, was held in the city of Kragujevac on May 27th and 28th, 2010. The Congress was organised by the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce and the Caritas Belgium. It was supported by the Ministry for Economy and Regional Development and realised in cooperation with the Association “Rural Tourism of Serbia”, the Centre for Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Development (CenORT) and the City of Kragujevac.


The Congress was the opportunity to present the previous activities in rural tourism development in Serbia as well as the development potentials of this sector. International participants from Latvia, Spain, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Belgium presented their experiences and good practice case studies. According to the international participants’ judgment the rural tourism in Serbia has not been sufficiently developed yet although there was an increase in the number of rural tourists in the last five years. The need for strengthening the partnership between public and private sector was emphasized and the conclusions were drawn in order to act as the incentives for the further cooperation at all levels.


The Declaration on Rural Tourism was adopted, in which the role of all stakeholders who were involved in service providing was defined. By signing this Declaration, the signatories obliged to fully implement it, while the Declaration remained available for admission to all other stakeholders who were willing to work together in the field of rural development and rural tourism development in Serbia.


On behalf of the CenORT, Prof. Dr Jovan Popesku, President, was speaker at the Congress. He  presented the topic „Marketing in Rural Tourism“ and signed the Declaration on Rural Tourism.
